Hashimoto’s encephalopathy masquerading as affective illness: a case report

Abstract Background Hashimoto’s encephalopathy (HE) is a rare but controversial syndrome showing variety of neurological and psychiatric manifestations associated with autoimmune thyroiditis. Case presentation We present case 46-year-old hypertensive female who developed acute onset behavioral symptoms mimicking affective disorder (mania). Investigations revealed high levels anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone. EEG MRI findings were consistent those seen in encephalopathy. She showed excellent response to dose corticosteroids that helped making the diagnosis Conclusions an extremely important, though rare, diagnosis. It should be suspected screened for patients unknown origin because responses treatment are usually excellent.
